UPCOMING EVENTS
As part of our mission to “develop cultural ambassadors, ”CHEC celebrates the rich heritages of all of our students throughout the school year. The heritage months serve as a culminating event, when we highlight the different cultures.   September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month. In order to highlight the rich history and contributions of our Latinx students and faculty, please take advantage of the many resources that exist to enrich your curriculum and instruction.  Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Assemblies will be virtual and will take place for High School Advisory on Monday, October 25, and for Middle School Advisory Friday October 29.

This Week’s Focus

This week, the focus is on the phrases from the mission which state, “Socio-emotional learning, empathy and restorative practices are the foundations of our school climate and culture, and We trust one another to continually improve our practices..”

This aligns to the Culture of Achievement Domain, which has as one of its goals:

By June 2022, we will increase the student satisfaction – Index from 93% to 95%.
  • Sub-Goal 1: Increase the percentage of students who feel loved from 52% to 61% by June 2022
  • Sub-Goal 2: Increase the percentage of students who feel prepared from 55% to 65% by June 2022

In our Panorama Survey of last spring, only 47% of our students rated themselves highly on the dimension of Perseverance.  Perseverance is related to Self Management and only 61% of our students rated themselves highly on Self Management.  These are Social Emotional skills and competencies that can be taught and learned, and as we think about our professional development of Friday, and our initiative to integrate SEL with content, we have an amazing opportunity to do so during our upcoming portfolio presentations (October 26 and 27).

Instead of the questions we usually ask, about content, and about what was difficult or easy, we can focus on questions that have students reflect on their process, their goal setting, their feelings about the project, their time management, the relevance of the project, what they did when they got stuck, how they would like to change their product going forward.  We can make this a truly reflective process, one where students present whatever work they have, complete or not, and use it as a learning tool to move forward. We can build empathy and communication among classmates, as we ask classmates to provide each other feedback and reinforcement.

We can also get feedback from students on how we taught the project, and what they found interesting, or what they found not entirely engaging.  In this way we can make our projects more compelling as we move forward.

Over the next two weeks, please brainstorm with your department and SLC, how you can make the portfolio presentation process a truly reflective and celebratory process, for all students, regardless of where they are currently in the completion of their GRASPS.

COVID 19 UPDATES

The COVID 19 SERT Team will meet again on Tuesday, October 12, at 3:45 in the Cafeteria and virtually. In this week’s meeting, we will be joined by our Student Health Ambassadors, who will share their plans.

UPDATE – CHEC has been selected as a Vaccination Site!  As you may have heard, we will be hosting a 4 days a week COVID – 19 vaccine camp here @ CHEC starting October 12 (Tuesday). Depending on how well we do, we may be authorized to hold more camps in November. Currently, this is only for October.  Please share this information with your students and families!

  • The camps will run Tuesday – Thursday (3:30 PM – 8:00 PM) and Saturday (12:00 – 5:00 PM).
  • First 200 adults will receive a $51 gift card.
  • First 200 students will receive Apple AirPods (or they can choose a gift card, if still available).
  • If only students get vaccinated, 200 will receive cards and 200 will receive AirPods.

Update on Testing and Cases:

Since the last update, we have tested no additional students, and there has been one additional positive case.   Below are the notes from the first COVID 19 SERT meeting, as well as recommendations and suggestions.

  • In response to the need to maintain a healthy and safe environment, we will be implementing the following:
  • All desks in classes should be facing forward.
  • We must continually reinforce proper wearing of masks – we will reintroduce our COVID 19 prevention videos, and will train student health ambassadors to support adherence to all norms and protocols.

Suggestions for follow up:

  • We are communicating by email, whenever a student has to quarantine, so that teachers can be aware and provide work and access to classes.  All teachers should view the webinar on Simulcast to be prepared for hybrid teaching. .
  • We will be exploring ways to raise funds to purchase tents and furniture for outdoor lunch and learning.

INSTRUCTION:
MS. ERMIS' AP LITERATURE CLASS
WEEK 7 OF ADVISORY 1

During this week, the first GRASPS should be close to complete – Portfolio presentations are in just two  weeks! In order to present portfolios, students should be keeping their work in e-Portfolios on CANVAS, or in One Drive.  If you need support with this process, please see your Department Chairperson.

As we discussed in the professional development day, the amount of content is not as important as the students’ depth of understanding, and their development of “soft” skills such as organization, planning, time management.  Preparing for portfolios can be a celebration and reflection on work as opposed to a stressful experience. We can work on SEL integrated with Content by focusing on the reflective, soft skills for portfolio presentations.  Students should present whatever they have complete, and reflect on the process, what they understand, and what they still need to work on.

In order to build on our themes of consistency and relationship building ,we will use the Agenda Book as a tool. The Books have arrived and will be distributed by  PLT in Middle School, and by ELA class in high school.  Your SLC Administrator will work with you in SLC to develop a launch plan.

Thank you for all you do to make instruction engaging for all students!
