Principal: Maria Tukeva

DECEMBER 13, 2021: THIS WEEK'S FOCUS

This week, the focus is on the section of the mission which states, Socio-emotional learning, empathy and restorative practices are the foundations of our school climate and culture.

We foster a growth mindset and find joy and purpose in learning and collaborating.

We are also focused on the following CSP Goals and Sub-Goals:

By June 2022, we will increase the student satisfaction – Index from 93% to 95%.
    • Sub-Goal 1: Increase the percentage of students who feel loved from 56% to 61% by June 2022
    • Sub-Goal 2: Increase the percentage of students who feel prepared from 55% to 65% by June 2022

This week, we will begin to explicitly engage our students in a process of understanding and embracing our school-wide norms.   Research on positive school climates shows that 3 to 5 positively stated norms, which are understood and embraced by the whole school community, can lead to a positive, productive and joyful school climate.

We have created four norms, aligned to our mission, which are:

We own our learning and growth
We show respect and empathy
We are dependable
We are digital citizens

This week, we are teaching lessons on the first norm, “We own our learning and growth.” This is a foundational norm, in that it empowers students to take charge of their learning, and develop a love of learning.  This belief in owning learning and having a growth mind set, is crucial for all students and adults to develop.  When students begin to understand the physiology of the brain, they start to believe in their own growth and potential.  As educators, we must create the environment and conditions where this mind set can flourish.  Once students are vested in their own growth and learning, the other norms can naturally follow and be developed.

Together with SLC’s,  our Admin team has developed a lesson plan on the norm, and follow up Do Now’s to be used in each period. We will be reinforcing the norm in all common spaces, hallways and activities.  Students will be recognized for demonstrating the norm.   Please reach out to your SLC administrator if you need any support or clarification in delivering these important lessons.

Thank you to all team members for engaging in the development of these lessons on norms, and for your commitment to engaging our students in them as full participants.  As we have discussed, this is a long process, however we are looking to lasting growth, which takes time and a full team effort.  Thank you as always, for believing in the mission and goals and for your dedication to our students and community.

INSIGHT SURVEY UPDATE

We are now at 54% completion of the Insight Survey – our goal is at least 80%.  Thank you to all who have completed the survey, as you know we value this information as a way to improve our school.  The survey takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and we have until this Friday, December 17, to complete it.  I know we are all beyond busy,  however it would be greatly appreciated it if you complete it!

COVID 19 UPDATES
The COVID 19 SERT Team will meet again on Tuesday, December 21, at 3:45 in the High School Library and virtually..

Update on Testing and Cases:
Since the last update, we tested over 300 students, and there have been five additional self reported positive cases. This week our testing day is Tuesday, and we must test again 30%, or 460 students.

  • We must continually reinforce proper wearing of masks – we will reintroduce our COVID 19 prevention videos, our student health ambassadors will be visiting classes to support adherence to all norms and protocols.
  • Limiting unnecessary passes for students is critical to limiting transmission. The Agenda book is the only pass, and it must be signed and dated.

Week 6 of Advisory 2

We are now entering the sixth week of the second advisory, and believe it or not, Progress Reports are already due by COB on December 17th.  Please build reflection time into class so that students can reflect on what work they need to hand in in order to have the best possible grade.  Since students should be well into their GRASPS, it is recommended to build in class time in for peer review and revision of the GRASPS.

Instructional Calendar

The Instructional Calendar is a living document that houses all the major curricular requirements, assessments, and schoolwide events. The Instructional Calendar is complete for the moment, however changes may be made and will be noted.  If you have any requests for additions to the Instructional Calendar, please contact Mr. Magee, peter.magee@k12.dc.gov, or your SLC Administrator.

PROJECTS FUNDED

MS. RYAN'S FUNDED CLASSROOM PROJECT IS: "WE WANT A WONDERFUL WORKING WIRED WHITEBOARD!"

My Students
My students are mostly from the Columbia Heights neighborhood of DC, although some kids commute farther across the city to attend our bilingual middle school program. They are intellectually curious scholars budding into future leaders in the quest for social justice. They are compassionate and full of energy and just as thrilled as I am to be back in the school building after a year of virtual learning.

My Project
We will use this interactive white board to teach every single day. It will make lessons more exciting, engaging, and motivate students to get creative with math problem solving. There are so many online tools that can be shared and displayed visually using the internet, computer tools, and drawing to improve the quality of math instruction for all our middle school math students! Every lesson will be made more clear using this visual resource. We will reach all of our diverse students and different learning styles better with this added tool!.
MS.MINTZ'S CLASSROOM PROJECT IS: "GETTING COZY IN OUR ZEN SPACE"

My Students
I teach a diverse group of smart and silly 6th grade students at a bilingual public school in Washington, D.C. Many of my students are immigrants, English language learners, and special education students. My students are resilient, talented, and hungry to learn. Many have overcome myriad challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, housing insecurity, violence in the community, and economic hardship. Yet, they show up to school day after day ready to give their best..

My Project
My students have complex lives and often come to school with a lot on their minds. Flexible seating will allow my students to emotionally self-regulate so that they can show up to class ready to learn and do their best. These bean bags will provide a comfy and inviting space in my classroom for students to relax and recharge. Students love to hang out in my classroom library, but there is not enough seating space for them. Having a cozy and safe area of the class will provide my students with flexibility and comfort whether they are taking a mental break by themselves or working in small groups.

NEW PROJECTS CREATED

MR. MAGEE HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HIS STUDENTS: “DNA ANALYSIS FOR INTRODUCTORY & ADVANCED BIOLOGY STUDENTS

My Students
Our students are a remarkable group of 6th through 12th graders at an inner-city school in Washington, DC. My school caters to students from all over our nation's capital. Learners in my class come from a variety of backgrounds, and many of them are bilingual. Often times, it is the students who are teaching me. This helps make going into school every day a joy. Despite the minority and low-income status of the majority of our students, our school is dedicated to preparing all of our students to go to college. Many of my students are learning English as a second language, and most need hands-on experience with the content in order to be ready to take on college-level work.

My Project
Learning about DNA is an integral part of any high school Life Science curriculum. The materials requested will help my students run analysis that illustrates the structure of DNA fragments (size & charge) and the sort of work that they can expect from college lab sciences and beyond. Understanding how our DNA works means understanding more about ourselves and those around us. Every year I have a handful of students who are interested in studying health sciences. I am fortunate enough to be able to provide these learners with a robust, hands-on laboratory curriculum. The one piece that I have been looking to add is the electrophoresis chambers and their ability to analyze DNA fragments.
MR. PINTO HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HIS STUDENTS: “3D PRINTING FOR HISTORY AND ARTS

My Students
I serve students from low income families. Most of my students are African-American and also newcomers or 2nd generation of immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. Despite all the difficulties, my students are very kind, and they have a good heart. They are dedicated and resilient. They have also showed pride, poise and perseverance to become successful in life.

My Project
The 3D printer will take my students' learning to the next level by helping them create their own artifacts and be immersed in hands-on projects where they will own both the process and the final product. 3D printing is becoming an essential skill in the teaching and learning of Social Sciences, Geography, History and Art as students will visualize and touch examples pieces of art and cultural heritage. We will learn how to scan and obtain photogrammetric models in 3D and we will finally print them in the 3d printer.
MR. AGUILAR HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HIS STUDENTS: “MODIFIED WORKSHEETS

My Students
My students are a wonderful group of High school kids, many who have immigrated from countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Philippines, Ethiopia, Laos, and the Dominican Republic amongst other. 90% of students at my school are language learners - whether that is learning Spanish for the first time, or learning English. We are a dual language community that works together to learn about societal issues, poetry, theatre, and short stories. My students work together to break language barriers and communicate with each other.

My Project
Our ESL class is in need of a printer. School is not providing more ink of old printer (too old). Unfortunately, the daily jams have led to more virtual work, but ESL students needs lots of modified printed worksheets. Having a printer allows our lessons to be flexible and ready. Most importantly many of my former students are stopping by after school in need of printing their documents (letter of recommendations, etc). When students submit some of their virtual work, I like to display them in the "students' famous wall".
MR. ARABIAN HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HIS STUDENTS: “IPAD TO ENRICH THE ESL CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE

My Students
My ESL students have faced enormous challenges and demonstrated remarkable perseverance through the pandemic and now we are all back in school. My students are some of the most resilient people I have ever met. Many of them have fled their home country because of violence, political corruption, and poverty. All my students are English language learners and some have experienced interrupted education. However, they do not let their current or past struggles get in the way of pursuing a better future for themselves and their families. My students invest time in their education. They stay after school, come to school on Saturdays, and even come in the summer just so they can catch up to the rest of their peers.

My Project
Since the beginning of virtual learning, educators have incorporated dozens of new apps and websites in the curriculum. These tools are a great way to implement innovative strategies to engage students, and kindle in them the desire to learn. An iPad is an excellent classroom tool; it can be used to project notes, manage apps such as Class Dojo, Teams, and BrainPOP! Speaking apps, such as Lingt, which are integral to ESL practice, are easily conducted through an iPad. Having an iPad would greatly increase my efficacy as an educator; it is a portable way to manage apps, communicate with parents, and engage my students.
MS. NUNEZ HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS: “BASICS REFILL!

My Students
My students are very diverse with a lot of characteristics that make them special. You can walk into any classroom and meet people from all over the world. We are a low-income community, and 100% of our students are economically disadvantaged. My students are part of a Spanish immersion program where kids from different cultures and backgrounds have the opportunity to be in contact with a different language that will provide them with skills that help them stand out.

My Project
Coming back to our school building at the beginning of the year was exciting and stressful at the same thing. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them a clean and safe environment to learn. The tissues, all purpose cleaner, pencils and organization material will allow students to have everything they need ready for them to use. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that need help to afford basic supplies

I have seen how having everything in our classroom can positively affect my students work!
MS. GARCIA HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS: “CHARGED UP!

My Students
My students are a wonderful group of 8th graders, many of whom have immigrated from countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Philippines, Ethiopia, Laos, and the Dominican Republic. All 8th grade students at my school are language learners whether that is learning Spanish for the first time or learning English. We are a dual language community that works together to learn about societal issues, poetry, theatre, and short stories all in Spanish! The majority of my students come from low-income backgrounds and are striving to pursue their education to make a difference in their community. My students work together to break language barriers and communicate with each other. I have seen students who speak only Spanish work with students who only speak English to collaborate and help each other succeed.

My Project
I am requesting in class chargers for my students as many of them either lost or broken their chargers leaving them without access to technology. Many times students have to share chargers or computers as a result of not having their own. Many families cannot afford to continuously provide chargers for the students and this results in them being behind on their work. Please consider donating chargers to power our students learning. With these materials, all students can have access to the content and will not fall behind in class. Additionally, I am requesting extension cords, masks, cleaning supplies and basic materials needed daily in our classroom.
MS. ALVARADO HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS: “BRINGING COLOR AND FUN TO THE MATH CLASSROOM!

My Students
My students are some of the most resilient people I have ever met. Many of them have fled their home country because of violence, political corruption, and poverty. All my students are English language learners and some have experienced interrupted education. However, they do not let their current or past struggles get in the way of pursuing a better future for themselves and their families. My students invest time in their education. They stay after school, come to school on Saturdays, and even come in the summer just so they can catch up to the rest of their peers. The adversity my students face is not that of a typical teenager, especially in the current political climate; however, their passion and perseverance is truly inspiring.

My Project
Our math class is in need of a color printer. Our current printer is nearing the end of its life. Unfortunately, the daily jams have led to more virtual work, but I still have many students who need to be able to work on paper. Having the printer in the classroom gives me the ability to differentiate and accommodate to all my students in real-time. It allows for our lessons to be flexible. Most importantly many of my former students are stopping by after school in need of printing for scholarships, FAFSA, and college applications. In order to print from our printer, every four pages there is a jam, so it is not ideal in situations when students need to submit work by a deadline.
MS. CONNIE HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS: “PROFESSIONAL, QUALITY EMPOWERMENT OPPORTUNITIES

My Students
My students are 6 –12th graders in an urban DC Public School in Washington, DC. We believe that all students who graduate will be prepared to succeed in college and civic life as leaders in the quest for social justice and anti-racism. We focus on socio-emotional learning as a key part of our program for students and staff. Restorative practices are the foundation of our school climate, as we enhance relationships and build community. We foster a growth mindset through which all stakeholders collaborate to achieve goals and overcome obstacles.

My Project
Many students enter my office for support with their classroom projects. At our school we have the students practice public speaking using a past project that they worked on all semester. They are to present the "portfolio" using technology and other useful tools in presenting. This printer and its quality will assist the students in creating and printing out quality materials to help enhance their projects. And as the social worker, I hope to increase their self-esteem and confidence. Oftentimes, students ask for college and job reference/recommendation letters. This quality printer will by far assist in printing out quality letters.
MS. FERGUSON HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS: “END THE STIGMA

My Students
Help me give my students the ability to spread the word about the importance of ending the stigma of mental health to students in our school. Like everyone in the world, students in my school have experienced the loss of a fellow student, violence in their neighborhoods, and food insecurity. As a result, many are experiencing anxiety and depression, but they are afraid to receive support from social workers, therapists, and counselors because of the stigma attached mental health. Students in my health class will create an ad campaign to end the stigma attached to mental health and encourage other students to receive the mental health support they need.

My Project
After completing a unit learning about mental and emotional health, students will create posters to place around the school advocating the end of stigma attached to receiving mental health supports. Students creating the posters will learn how to advocate and support their friends and families who might be struggling with their mental health. In addition, it is important that we norm for everyone in the building that anyone can need support and should receive it. Students will know where they can find mental health supports in the building and close by.
DR. BARNETT HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS: “MOVING FORWARD

My Students
Our students are some of the most resilient, persistent, talented, and loving students in the nation. Throughout the pandemic, they persevered and advocated for their learning both musically and academically. We are happy to be back in-person and soon to be hosting our first in-person concert in two years.

My Project
We have been fortunate this year to receive more string instruments through DonorsChoose. As we have received more instruments, we now need storage racks to safely and efficiently store the instruments. We want to make sure that instruments are not placed on the floor or in a place where they cannot maintain their tuning or will be damaged. The storage racks will help us organize the instruments but class and keep them in shape for many years to come. The racks will ensure that these instruments can be used for many years to come. We have no doubt with the the supplies we need, students will thrive, not only musically but also academically.
