MISSION AND COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL PLAN FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
CHEC CELEBRATES HISPANIC/LATINX HERITAGE MONTH
MS. MENENDEZ'S MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE CLASS
MARIA TUKEVA’S (MT) MESSAGE:
As part of our mission to “develop cultural ambassadors, ”CHEC celebrates the rich heritages of all of our students throughout the school year. The heritage months serve as a culminating event, when we highlight the different cultures.   September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month. In order to highlight the rich history and contributions of our Latinx students and faculty, please take advantage of the many resources that exist to enrich your curriculum and instruction.  If you would like to get involved with planning our Heritage Month Assemblies, please contact our Heritage Month Committee!

This Week’s Focus

This week, the focus continues to be on the phrase from the mission which states, “We trust one another to continually improve our practices.”  This week we will celebrate Back to School Night with our families, and this provides us with an opportunity to work toward the Engagement goals of our CSP:

  • By June 2022, we will engage 100% of our parents in at least two school events.
  • By June 2022, we will increase positive response rate on the parent Panorama survey regarding “I feel well informed about what is happening at my child's school” from 79% to 89% and “My school regularly communicates updates about my child's progress with me” from 79% to 89%

For Back to School Night, which will be entirely virtual, we will have to general sessions, one at 4 pm, and one at 6 pm. These will be facilitated by administrators and coordinators, and will focus on schoolwide initiatives and updates.  From 4:30 to 6:00 pm, parents will have the opportunity to meet virtually with their children’s teachers, by “following” their child’s schedule. This is the opportunity to share your syllabus, curriculum goals,  and your projects with families, and to gain their feedback through questions and reflection.  For example, you can share your first GRASPS with families, and provide examples of student work and learning.  Through this process, you can elicit parent reflections on what they find interesting about the GRASPS, and suggestions for refinement.  Please also provide parents with invitations to the first portfolio presentations, which hare coming up in about five weeks!

This is also an opportunity to share your contact information with parents, and let them know how to check on their child’s progress in your class, including how to access ASPEN, and what to do if they are concerned about their child’s progress.

COVID 19 UPDATES

The COVID 19 SERT Team met on last Tuesday, and discussed what is working well and what needs improvement.

  • In response to the need to maintain a healthy and safe environment, we will be implementing the following:
  • All desks in classes should be facing forward.
  • We must continually reinforce proper wearing of masks – we will reintroduce our COVID 19 prevention videos, and will train student health ambassadors to support adherence to all norms and protocols.
  • We will provide weekly data on the number of cases, so that the community can be aware of current data and conditions.

Suggestions for follow up:
  • We are communicating by email, whenever a student has to quarantine, so that teachers can be aware and provide work and access to classes.  To make this more efficient, we will check to see if there is a way for ASPEN to provide immediate notification of a student in quarantine.
  • We are still in need of volunteers to support lunch and recess duties, as this is the time when most students are
  • We will be exploring ways to raise funds to purchase tents and furniture for outdoor lunch and learning.

The next COVID 19 SERT team meeting will be Tuesday, September 28 at 3:45 pm in the Cafeteria, with a virtual option.

INSTRUCTION:
MS. GUILLEN'S 7TH GRADE HISTORY CLASS
WEEK 4 OF ADVISORY 1

It is unbelievable, but we are in the fourth week of the first advisory, and the advisory is almost half over!   During this week it is important to make sure students are clear on where they stand in terms of their work and their grades.  Please build some reflection time into class for students to reflect on where they are and what they need to do.   During our walk throughs this week, we will be providing feedback on SEL openers and strategies, Tier 1 interventions, and the level of engagement in the current GRASPS. This week, students should be fully engaged in their first GRASPS, and working to complete it over the next two weeks.  After the introduction of the GRASPS, each lesson builds on the content and work, so that the final product is completed through both work and class and outside of class. If you need any assistance with sequencing the instruction of your GRASPS, please see your department chair or SLC administrator.

Thank you for all you do to make instruction engaging for all students!

UPDATES FROM: I DONORS CHOOSE I

DONORS CHOOSE - MS. NUNEZ HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS!

Ms. Nunez’ classroom project Ready to Learn was recently posted at Donor’s Choose.

My Students
My students are very diverse with a lot of characteristics that make them special. You can walk into any classroom and meet people from all over the world. We are a low-income community, and 100% of our students are economically disadvantaged. My students are part of a Spanish immersion program where kids from different cultures and backgrounds have the opportunity to be in contact with a different language that will provide them with skills that help them stand out.

My Project
My kids are so excited to come back to school after a long time at home! I feel that this year we are all starting from scratch so it is a great opportunity for everyone with the great energy that we are bringing to the class. I want to make sure my students have individual sets of materials to ensure safety and equitable access. Students will need markers, composition notebooks, erasers, facemasks, bandaids, and pencil pouches for everyday use. They will store their notebooks in the classroom for the week. This will support them with having what they need to feel safe as well as prepared for learning!

Help me give my students high quality Lenovo laptop bags and Hi-Fi head phones.
