CHEC CELEBRATES HISPANIC / LATINX HERITAGE MONTH

As part of our mission to “develop cultural ambassadors, ”CHEC celebrates the rich heritages of all of our students throughout the school year. The heritage months serve as a culminating event, when we highlight the different cultures. September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month. In order to highlight the rich history and contributions of our Latinx students and faculty, please take advantage of the many resources that exist to enrich your curriculum and instruction. COVID 19 UPDATES

The COVID 19 SERT Team will meet on Tuesday, October 12, at 3:45 in the Cafeteria and virtually.

Update on Testing and Cases:
Since the last update, we have tested 115  students, and there have been no additional  positive cases.   Below are the notes from the secondd COVID 19 SERT meeting, as well as recommendations and suggestions.

  • All desks in classes should be facing forward.
  • If you change your seating arrangement, you must inform your SLC administrator and send an updated seating chart BEFORE it is changed.
  • Proper Masks must be work – no gaitors or ski masks allowed.  If you need more masks, please contact Pankaj Raymajhi.
  • Students should not be released from class for breaks – please create a break area in your room.
  • We have received the Agenda Books. Once they are distributed, the Agenda book will be the only allowable pass for students to leave class.

Suggestions followed up:
  • We are creating a flow chart that explains the process to be followed if someone informs you that he/she is positive or lives with someone who is positive
  • We are creating another flow chart that explains when and how to send a student to the Isolation Room.
  • A student Health Ambassador group has been created, Ms. Patterson will be assisting in the coordination. They will create signage and announcements.

WE HAVE A RECOGNITION! HONORED TEACHERS PARTNERSHIP CONTINUES THIS YEAR!

Columbia Heights Education Campus’s great teachers deserve to be recognized! We’re proud to partner with Honored Schools again this year to do just that! Go to HonoredSchools.org to tell Columbia Heights Education Campus teachers how they’ve made a difference. Please share this with parents and students! Once recognized, teachers get an email with your recognition story and we’ll celebrate them! Last year our very own Ms. Ramirez won the Life-Changing Teacher Award and a $5,000 cash award!
This week, the focus is on the phrases from the mission which state, “Socio-emotional learning, empathy and restorative practices are the foundations of our school climate and culture, and We trust one another to continually improve our practices..”

This aligns to the Culture of Achievement Domain, which has as one of its goals:

By June 2022, we will increase the student satisfaction – Index from 93% to 95%.

  • Sub-Goal 1: Increase the percentage of students who feel loved from 52% to 61% by June 2022
  • Sub-Goal 2: Increase the percentage of students who feel prepared from 55% to 65% by June 2022

The daily climate of our school can give us indicators of how loved, prepared, and satisfied students are feeling with school.  We are about to give the Fall Panorama survey, which can give us baseline data on these perceptions, but our daily observations, anecdotal data, attendance data, suspension data, and referral data can give us some initial indicators. We knew before the school year started, that adjusting to in person instruction after 18 months of virtual instruction, with limited engagement or accountability, would be difficult.  During virtual instruction, we know many students signed on to class, but were not really “there.”  Many students had to work, others simply did not like virtual instruction.  Students got used to making their own schedule, and as a result it is difficult for some of them to follow a schedule of classes with specific times they must be in one place.  Students were not in communication with their peers, except through social media, so face to face communication has become more difficult for many.  Social media conflicts that started during virtual, are continuing now.

Some of the trends we are seeing which show that many students are struggling to adapt, include more frequent fights than usual, resulting in seven suspensions so far this year and at least 15  restitution speeches and parent conferences.   In addition, we are seeing many cases of class cutting, or leaving class without permission, or entering another class without permission.  Our Chronic Absence rate is at its highest ever – 57%.  Of course, there is the impact of quarantining, and staying home when ill, but a good number of these absences are due to class cutting.

In order to address student needs, and assist students in adjusting to the structure of in person learning, we need to be extremely consistent and aligned in our Norms,  Routines and Rituals.  We also need support and collaboration, as we absorb the stresses students are experiencing while handling our own personal stresses.  This is an area we will explore in more depth in our PD day on Friday, as we continue to respond and reset, after these first five weeks of school.  Students crave firm but loving structure, and this is what consistency can provide.

I would like to thank each and every member of the team for the hard work you do every day, the compassion you show to our students and colleagues, and your resilience and commitment to excellence.  This is extremely difficult work in the best of times, and the times we are living make it even more difficult.  By leaning on one another when necessary,  exercising self care, and building trust in ourselves, our students and our families, we will be able to finish this year feeling stronger, more prepared, and more loved, than ever before.

Thank you CHEC team! Griffins and Knights!
WEEK 6 OF ADVISORY 1

The Advisory is now one half over, and progress reports are due on Wednesday, October 6 by 4:30 pm. Since this is the day before Parent Teacher Conference Day, it is extremely important that the progress reports be up to date and complete, so you can have productive conversations with parents. For Parent Teacher Conferences, which will be virtual, you must create links according to the instructions provided by your SLC administrator, and be sure to have your gradebook, as well as access to student work with you so you can share with parents. Use this time to find out what parents ideas and concerns are, and suggestions they may have about how to engage their child to the fullest. Remember that parent teacher conferences are based on the concept of partnership and communication – it must be two way! Please keep a log of your conferences, you will need it for CSC, and to keep track of how many parents are engaging. Please also provide parents with a virtual invitation to your first Portfolio presentations, which are October 26 and 27

During this week, the first GRASPS should be close to complete – Portfolio presentations are in just three weeks!  During our walk throughs this week, we will be providing feedback on SEL openers and strategies, Tier 1 interventions, and the level of engagement in the current GRASPS. After the introduction of the GRASPS, each lesson builds on the content and work, so that the final product is completed through both work and class and outside of class. If you need any assistance with sequencing the instruction of your GRASPS, please see your department chair or SLC administrator.

Thank you for all you do to make instruction engaging for all students!

CHEC JAPANESE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN ONLINE MEETING WITH JAPAN

On September 27th, current and former Japanese course students participated in the online cross-cultural program with students in Japan. The event hosted about 50 students from Hiroshima, Japan, 14 students from Houston TX, and 14 CHEC students. CHEC students introduced our school, split into small groups and interacted with all other participants.  They spoke in Japanese, and students in Japan spoke in English. Everyone was engaging very actively, built amazing friendship.

Student comment by Yasmeen Collins, 12th;
"My friends and I looked forward to the Kakehashi (bridge) program and it didn't disappoint. Immediately, we were greeted by an outstanding turnout and many enthusiastic staff. The Japanese students were open and excited to share things about their school and their culture which was more than amazing. We got to share things from fancy deodorant to the similarities in our train systems and we were driven to maintain contact past the end of our scheduled time. I think I speak for all of us when I say that I can't wait for more of this program."
