UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

Principal: Maria Tukeva

NOVEMBER 28, 2022:

This week’s focus is on the phrase from the Mission,

We value student choice and voice, and a rich learning environment that includes sports, the arts, and extracurriculars..

As a project based school, all of our instruction is aligned to rigorous, relevant projects, which we hope are engaging and interesting for our students.  One of the questions we have been exploring in our Innovation Team is how students experience project based learning.  A key to successful project based learning is taking into account student interests and needs, and providing choice and voice, as described in our mission.  Another key is using a workshop model in class, so that the project becomes the center of instruction, and not an afterthought. In order for students to have success in completing projects, they not only need to be interested, they need structured time in class, to learn the skills associated with the project, and then apply them in the moment.

Another key to a successful and engaging project, is an authentic audience. If students are sharing their work on with classmates, parents, other teachers, school partners and community members, they are motivated to perform to a higher level, because they see the importance of their work in a context beyond the classroom.

As we work on second advisory projects, let’s take extra time to listen to student voice about what they find interesting and important about the project, and what they might want to change.

XQ REDESIGN UPDATE

Shout out to all Redesign Team and Innovation Team  members!  Our two Innovation Teams – Food Equity and Interdisciplinary Projects/International Travel are now working on brainstorming and developing prototypes based on their research.  Please put December 20, 5:00 pm, and December 21s, all lunch periods, on your calendar.  All are invited to view the work of the Innovation Team and provide additional feedback on our prototypes!

The work of our Innovation Teams, and the learnings from our Inspiration Visits, confirms an insight -  in order for the our bold idea of ‘Students as Designers of their Learning and Destiny ’ to come to life in a sustainable way, the concepts and skills that make up design thinking need to be integrated across the school community in an ongoing and organic fashion. Design thinking is a discipline, or a way of doing things, that applies to all decisions and practices, large and small.

We may want to modify our bold idea to, “All CHEC community members are Designers of their Learning and Destiny.” What will we really want to change, on a deep level, is the way we all think, in order to become integrative thinkers focused on problem solving as a way of life.
Becoming design thinkers will allow us to redesign not just now, but on a continual basis, as it should be. Our overall goal is not a finite “redesign” plan, but more an aspiration described by Tim Brown, in Change by Design,  “to infuse design thinking – an approach for creative problem solving- into all facets of the organization, products or services to discover new alternatives for ….  society as a whole.”

We encourage all staff members to take a free, on line course, called “Design Thinking for the Greater Good.”

The course takes about 8 to 10 hours, at your own pace, and is free and on line.

We will offer Admin Premium to all who complete the course, and will be forming study groups of those who engage in the course.  If you would like to sign up of these study groups, please fill out the attached form. https://forms.microsoft.com/Pages/ShareFormPage.aspx?id=7kagKk6zM0qSt5md8rwKMlBbjpUnjlNBkU-GwWNM3dNUMkxLRElWNEFUTkk1OVRSMTE4OVA5SE5LMy4u&sharetoken=7zDFC0YTMWYBbaWlKu4M

The Redesign Team will meet this Wednesday, at 3:30 pm in the Cafeteria.  If you have identified a problem  you would like help in addressing through the design thinking process, please send a description of the problem. If you are interested in one of the innovations, please contact Maria Tukeva, Principal,  Ms. Krishunda Penn Pearson, Redesign Director, your SLC Administrator, or any member of the XQ Redesign Team.  Please join the Redesign Team, and please reach out to interested students or parents!

For attendance at Focus Groups or with Innovation Team  meetings held after school we will offer Admin Premium, and up to 20 students who participate in the Innovation Teams will receive a $200 stipend and Community Service hours.  Please speak with your students, and find students who would like to become involved in the design of one or more of the innovations.

INSTRUCTION
MS. MALCOMB'S ENGLISH CLASS
Week 4 of Advisory 2

It is the fourth week of the Second Advisory, and there are three and half weeks leading into the holiday break.   During this week, students should be well on their way to completing their GRASPS.  With a project based model, each work period each day involves students working on a part of their GRASPS, following a mini-lesson on the standard/and objective aligned to the project.  If you need assistance in pacing out your project, please see one of the coaches, your Department Chair, or SLC Administrator.

High School classes will be administering ANET and AP Interims on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Whole Child

The Whole Child Antiracist initiative focuses on Trust building interactions.  Students need to know that they can trust you as an adult to give them the support they need to be successful in the classroom.  If the student cannot trust you, they will not be able to learn from you, and they may become distant.  It is imperative that the relationship is not ruined by Trust.  To help with those Trust building interactions, the Whole Child Anti racist initiative has a Trust building Continuum that will help assist with building those Trust building interactions.  Here is the link to read more about the Trust building Continuum:  Link to the Trust building Continuum

PROJECTS FUNDED

MR. LINDSEY’S NEW CLASSROOM FUNDED PROJECT IS: “HEALTH IS WEALTH

My Project
Please consider donating to our student athletes. These sports drinks will help properly hydrate our athletes for practice and competitions. Our athletes are coachable, relentless, and come to practice everyday. My hope is that you will support our athletes by giving them sports drinks to help them replenish before and after competitions. By providing these sports drinks, its a major step in the right direction for properly hydrating our student athletes throughout the season. Again we want our athletes to perform at the highest level possible. This is one step in the right direction.
