MISSION AND COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL PLAN FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
CHEC CELEBRATES HISPANIC/LATINX HERITAGE MONTH
MS. BRUGGEMAN'S SPANISH CLASS
MARIA TUKEVA’S (MT) MESSAGE:
As part of our mission to “develop cultural ambassadors, ”CHEC celebrates the rich heritages of all of our students throughout the school year. The heritage months serve as a culminating event, when we highlight the different cultures.   September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month. In order to highlight the rich history and contributions of our Latinx students and faculty, please take advantage of the many resources that exist to enrich your curriculum and instruction.  If you would like to get involved with planning our Heritage Month Assemblies, please contact our Heritage Month Committee!

This Week’s Focus

This week, the focus is on the phrase from the mission which states, “All Columbia Heights Education Campus graduates will be prepared to succeed in college.”
This aligns to the Culture of Achievement Domain, which has as one of its goals:

  • By June 2022, we will reduce the percentage of students receiving one or more F by 30%
    • Subgoal – By June 2022, 100% of all classes will have a failure rate of less than 10%

In order to succeed in college, students must succeed in our classes.  As we prepare to issue progress reports to students this Friday, it is a prime time to ensure that we are providing students with the feedback and support they need to pass all of their classes.  An F has an impact beyond just one advisory.  It can create a pattern for a student of feeling disengaged, like a failure, and discouraged. It takes our whole team to support all students to succeed, so if you have a student in your class who is failing,  look at all assignments and missing work,  analyze the support you have given, reach out to the student and parent, and reach out to colleagues to support. Working as a team, we can ensure that failure is not an option for any of our students.

UPCOMING EVENTS

COVID 19 UPDATES

The COVID 19 SERT Team will meet again on Tuesday, September 28, at 3:45 in the Cafeteria and virtually.

Update on Testing and Cases:

Since the last update, we have tested 106 students, and there has been one additional positive case.   Below are the notes from the first COVID 19 SERT meeting, as well as recommendations and suggestions.

  • In response to the need to maintain a healthy and safe environment, we will be implementing the following:
  • All desks in classes should be facing forward.
  • We must continually reinforce proper wearing of masks – we will reintroduce our COVID 19 prevention videos, and will train student health ambassadors to support adherence to all norms and protocols.
  • We will provide weekly data on the number of cases, so that the community can be aware of current data and conditions.

Suggestions for follow up:

  • We are communicating by email, whenever a student has to quarantine, so that teachers can be aware and provide work and access to classes.  To make this more efficient, we will check to see if there is a way for ASPEN to provide immediate notification of a student in quarantine.
  • We are still in need of volunteers to support lunch and recess duties, as this is the time when most students are
  • We will be exploring ways to raise funds to purchase tents and furniture for outdoor lunch and learning.

The next COVID 19 SERT team meeting will be Tuesday, September 28 at 3:45 pm in the Cafeteria, with a virtual option.

MR. JORGE SANCHEZ'S ALGEBRA I CLASS
WEEK 5 OF ADVISORY 1

The Advisory is now one half over, and progress reports will be issued this Friday.  This is a reminder that progress reports are extremely important for both students and parents, and their timely completion is critical.  Please make sure you are keeping grades up to date.  A recommendation is to build in time for conferencing with students, perhaps during work period, so that you can give them personal one on one feedback. In last week’s ALT team meeting, the group discussed and voted on which tier 1 interventions to focus on across the school.  The five top strategies were: Integrating SEL and Content, Conflict Resolution, Vocabulary, Grade Calibration and Progress Monitoring, and Goal Setting.  Department Chairs and LEAP Leaders will be following up to gain the feedback of all departments on how to build our proficiency in these interventions.

During this week, the first GRASPS should be close to complete – Portfolio presentations are in just four weeks!  During our walk throughs this week, we will be providing feedback on SEL openers and strategies, Tier 1 interventions, and the level of engagement in the current GRASPS.  After the introduction of the GRASPS, each lesson builds on the content and work, so that the final product is completed through both work and class and outside of class. If you need any assistance with sequencing the instruction of your GRASPS, please see your department chair or SLC administrator.

Thank you for all you do to make instruction engaging for all students!

UPDATES FROM: I DONORS CHOOSE I LIBRARY NEWS

DONORS CHOOSE - MS. MICHAELS HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS!

Ms. Michaels’ classroom project Building Identity through Love for Reading was recently posted at Donor’s Choose.

My Students
My DC students this year have been so adaptable and resilient to the challenges brought into the classroom by COVID. We are working everyday to build community with each other, and different supplies and resources would support my students throughout this school year.

My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning as they will have multiple ways to access the novel in our class. They can either listen to the audio book, or they can read along in the actual text with a class copy. Without the class copy of books, students will either only be able to access the book digitally or printed out in sections.

This unit, we will be learning about how to overcome challenges. We are reading our anchor text in order to better understand the resilience and strength of indigenous people, and making connections to our own lives.

DONORS CHOOSE - DR. BARNETT HAS A PROJECT FUNDED

Dr. Barnett’s classroom project  "Onward & Upward for the CHEC String Orchestra" was recently funded by Donors Choose.

My Students
The students at our school are some of the most hard working, engaged, and creative student in DC Public Schools. Their ability to manage rigorous curriculum and explore and expand their own creativity is truly remarkable. In addition, many of our students think outside of the box in regards to their future jobs and opportunities while understanding that that their music education will only serve to enrich and enhance their lives. Students also use the music program as an expressive outlet.

My Project
In the fall of 2018, I started a 6th grade string orchestra with a group of inquisitive, precocious, and wildly talented young musicians. This group of students were learning faster than any I have ever had. We were on track to perform at the DCPS Music Festival at the Kennedy Center. Then, March 2019 happened, and we began to learn at home. You expect me to say we stopped playing at that time, but absolutely not! These students persevered in ways that are truly inspirational. Home visits were made to tune instruments. Family and friends helped keep them going, and we not only continued but students thrived musically.

This group of students are now back in-person already making music.

There were techniques and skills that were hard, if not impossible to teach, during the pandemic. I want to make sure that I do not skip any steps in their technique building so that they continue to play throughout their lives. The method books I'm requesting are a strong way to make sure that they have all the skills they need to continue.

The resources for this project include:

  • Strictly Strings, Bk 2: Violin x 20
  • Strictly Strings Book 2 Conductor's Score x 1
  • Strictly Strings Violin Book 2 x 20
  • Strictly Strings for Viola, Book 2 x 10
  • Strictly Strings Cello Book 1 x 10
  • Strictly Strings Book 2 Bass x 4
