JOSHUA TINDUGAN - DCPS 2021 WLHS STUDENT OF THE YEAR
MARIA TUKEVA’S (MT) MESSAGE:
REFLECTING ON SCHOOL YEAR 20-21 AND PLANNING FOR SCHOOL YEAR 21-22

As part of our Academic Leadership Team work, we are reflecting on our Comprehensive School Plan goals, measuring our success, and reflecting on the gaps.  This year, all schools are asked to evaluate their CSP progress, and decide whether to keep the same goals for next year, modify them slightly, or create all new goals for next year.

Each of the domain groups (Engagement, Culture of Achievement, Academics and Shared Leadership) is looking at the goals for their domain, analyzing data to determine how well that goal has been met, and discussing whether that goal is important and relevant for next year.

As we have had to change and pivot so often during this experience, we have learned not only what works and what doesn’t in a virtual setting, we have been able to reflect upon what practices from before the pandemic need to be modified and changed.

The Academic Leadership Team will be analyzing, reflecting and brainstorming over the next two weeks, and will submit a draft plan for next year at our June Faculty Meeting.  Please join in the process! ALT team meetings are open to all staff. The next meeting is Tuesday, May 19 at 4:00 pm on TEAMS.

MAY IS ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER MONTH

During the month of May, we celebrate the contributions and rich cultures of the Asian and Pacific Islander community.  CHEC has a rich multicultural community, and during this month we will provide opportunities to deepen our learning, as we celebrate and recognize our students, families and staff of Asian and Pacific Island descent.  As a school committed to social justice and developing cultural ambassadors, we will focus this month on expanding our knowledge of the many cultures, countries and languages that make up the Asian Pacific Islander community, and delve into the rich history and many accomplishments.  Our Arts Department, in collaboration with our librarians, Dean Team, and others, are planning events and opportunities, culminating in an assembly.  Please reach out and find out more, so you can enrich your daily instruction and activities with students and families!

REENROLLMENT TIME

Please help us reach our enrollment target of 1,500 students for SY 21-22.  To date, we have enrolled 735 students, or 49% of our goal. Right now, 9th grade is in the lead in number of students enrolled!

Please make re-enrollment announcements part of your daily announcements or updates.  We are offering incentives to the teachers, counselors and support staff who help us enroll or re-enroll the most students!

BUDGET AND LSAT UPDATE

Our request for ESSER III Budget Assistance was partially approved, restoring another one of our lost positions.  We have reworked the budget, and have been able to maintain all positions; however, we have had to drastically cut all non-personnel costs and admin premium funds.  When we are able to budget for ESSER II Recovery and Acceleration funds, we will request to utilize these funds to restore the technology, equipment, and educational supply funds that were cut, as well as administrative premium.

A group called C4DC has done a complete analysis of how the funding formula for DCPS results in CHEC having the lowest per pupil allocation based on general education in the entire school system. - Budget 21-22\CRDC Budget Analysis Per Pupil Allocation 21-22  If you would like to participate in the advocacy effort being led by parents and students, please contact our LSAT Chairperson, Ahmad Nurridin, his email is anurriddin@gmail.com.

RECOVERY/ACCELERATION PLAN APPROVED

We have now submitted our budget spending plan for Summer Acceleration, and are extremely excited about what we will be able to offer this summer!  We have already started recruiting staff and students.  If you are interested in working in our creative and innovative Summer Acceleration plan, please reach out and apply.  Within the next two weeks, we will begin to work on the spending plan for the Acceleration and Recovery Activities to be held in during the school year. The outline of our goals and programming can be seen by clicking here.

WEEK 5 OF ADVISORY 4

We are at the midpoint of the fourth Advisory! Progress Reports are due on Wednesday, May 19 at 5:00 pm.  Please be sure you are contacting students and parents for any missing work.  Our goal is to have no student failures! Students have five weeks to finish the year strong!

By this week, all students should have completed their first GRASPS.  Work should be completed incrementally each day on different standards aligned parts of the GRASPS.   Our goal over the past advisory has been to improve the portfolio process by making sure students know how to organize their work in an e-portfolio format, either on CANVAS, or in Summit. That process begins with the first project of the advisory.

AP Testing starts this week, with AP English Literature, AP US History, AP Spanish Language and Literature, AP Art Portfolio, AP Computer Science Portfolio,  AP Psychology, AP French, and AP Music Theory.  Please see the instructional calendar for all of the dates of the different exams.  Please encourage all of your students who take AP, to do their best, and let them know how proud you are of them!

CHEC STUDENT AWARDED DCPS WORLD LANGUAGES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT OF THE YEAR

I'd like to recognize my amazing student Joshua Tindugan (11th) for receiving DCPS World Languages High School Student of the Year!! Please share this wonderful news with the CHEC community. His message video can be seen here on the DCPS world language page.

Here is the DCPS Web Page article:

Joshua Tindugan is an 11th grade student at Columbia Heights Education Campus. He was nominated by his Japanese teacher, Ms. Eriko Yamashita.

Why does this student deserve to be the World Language Student of the year?
Joshua truly enjoys speaking Japanese and is very active in class. Joshua is passionate about using the language and always eager to speak in class even in the virtual circumstances. He is not only on top of every assignment, but also his creations are beyond my expectation always, particularly for the level of course.

How does this student demonstrate the four domains of the global competency matrix: investigate the world, recognize perspectives, communicate ideas, and take action?
Joshua is very curious about learning other cultures. For example, we recently learned how to use chopsticks and students worked on the project that making a tutorial video about chopsticks use and Japanese table manners. He demonstrates recognizing multiple perspectives by learning about other cultures and is also very eager to pass the knowledge to others. He acknowledges that understanding other cultures helps advocating for anti-racism, including the current Asian-hate.

Congratulations Joshua!!

Ms. Yamashita

We hope you all are well. The Dean Team would like to share a few shout outs and friendly reminders.

Teacher Spotlight:
Today the spotlight shines on Ellen Nakpil!

Ms. Nakpil is our Read 180 teacher. She has impacted the lives of many students within his eight years of service at CHEC. When asked how students earn badges in class, Ms. Nakpil responded saying, ”Students can earn badges as specified in Canvas such as participation in Live classes and asynchronous learning, attending advisory and WUW classes, among others. Additionally, my students also earn stickers when they complete a whole segment in the Read 180 platform.” Ms. Nakpil shared the following when asked how has using restorative practices in your class helped you during virtual learning, “Restorative practices have become "restorative healing" for me. Hearing the voice of students and learning about their fears, doubts as well as their hopes and dreams have encouraged me to press on.” Thank you, Ms. Napkil, for your commitment to your students and team.

Everyone, please shine your light on Ms. Nakpil this week!
