UPCOMING EVENTS
CHEC CELEBRATES TEACHERS, EDUCATORS, SUPPORT STAFF FOR TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK!

This week we honor all of our dedicated, compassionate, and supremely talented educators! At CHEC, we are blessed to have an incredibly gifted and committed  group of teachers, counselors, social workers, educational aides, daycare teachers, support staff, deans, behavioral staff, librarians, and other educators!  We are fortunate not only for the calibre of our staff, but for the collaboration, teamwork and community that binds us together.  Our parents, students, administrators, and central office staff, can never thank you enough for all that you do, particularly during the tumultuous times we are living.

As a teacher/educator, you touch lives every day, and you are a keeper of dreams for our students.  During Teacher Appreciation Week, we salute you, honor you, and thank you for choosing this noble profession.

In Honor of Teacher Appreciation week, we will be sending Target Gift Cards to all educational staff.  It is a small token of appreciation, but it represents heartfelt gratitude.  We also will have an in person luncheon for all who can and wish to attend, with rotating arrival times.  Details are coming later on Monday!  Last, but not least, to recognize the many demands on your time, and reduce them just a bit – there will be no May Faculty Meeting!

Team, I feel deep gratitude every day for the opportunity to work alongside such amazing teachers and educators.   Thank you!!!

MAY IS ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER MONTH

During the month of May, we celebrate the contributions and rich cultures of the Asian and Pknacific Islander community.  CHEC has a rich multicultural community, and during this month we will provide opportunities to deepen our learning, as we celebrate and recognize our students, families and staff of Asian and Pacific Island descent.  As a school committed to social justice and developing cultural ambassadors, we will focus this month on expanding our knowledge of the many cultures, countries and languages that make up the Asian Pacific Islander community, and delve into the rich history and many accomplishments.  Our Arts Department, in collaboration with our librarians, Dean Team, and others, are planning events and opportunities, culminating in an assembly.  Please reach out and find out more, so you can enrich your daily instruction and activities with students and families!

REENROLLMENT TIME

Please help us reach our enrollment target of 1,500 students for SY 21-22.  To date, we have enrolled 550 students, or 37% of our goal. Please make re-enrollment announcements part of your daily announcements or updates.  We are offering incentives to the teachers, counselors and support staff who help us enroll or re-enroll the most students!

BUDGET AND LSAT UPDATE

There is ongoing advocacy in DC to prevent the loss of positions due to budget cuts.  I previously shared that our budget for School Year 21-22 had been reduced, due to a drop in enrollment, but also due to an inequitable funding formula which affects large schools.  Last week the Mayor announced additional funding for DCPS as a result of additional stimulus funding.  CHEC will receive an additional amount, although it is still not what is needed to avoid all staffing reductions.  The LSAT will meet on Wednesday to discuss the additional funds and priorities for utilizing them. A group called C4DC has done a complete analysis of how the funding formula for DCPS results in CHEC having the lowest per pupil allocation based on general education in the entire school system. - Budget 21-22\CRDC Budget Analysis Per Pupil Allocation 21-22  If you would like to participate in the advocacy effort being led by parents and students, please contact our LSAT Chairperson, Ahmad Nurridin, his email is anurriddin@gmail.com.

RECOVERY/ACCELERATION PLAN APPROVED

We have now submitted our budget spending plan for Summer Acceleration, and are extremely excited about what we will be able to offer this summer!  We have already started recruiting staff and students.  If you are interested in working in our creative and innovative Summer Acceleration plan, please reach out and apply.  Within the next two weeks, we will begin to work on the spending plan for the Acceleration and Recovery Activities to be held in during the school year. The outline of our goals and programming can be seen by clicking here.

4TH ADVISORY IN PERSON LEARNING

We have increased our In Person Learning in Advisory 4, to close to 30% of our total enrollment. A big shout out to all teachers and staff who are coming in person in the 4th Advisory.  If you are new to In-Person, please be sure to register and take the webinar described below:

Audience: Mandatory for all staff beginning an in-person assignment in Term 4

With the start of Term 4, we also would like to remind all staff who are returning to in-person work that they must complete this mandatory webinar. This session will outline the steps DCPS is taking to ensure a safe and healthy work environment, discuss expectations for employees and supervisors as we work toward a shared commitment to remaining healthy, review key COVID-19 response protocols, and share resources to support health and wellness. This Canvas-based webinar must be completed by COB on Monday, May 3.

SHOUT OUTS

  • Shout out and thank you to Mr. Yeboah, Ms. Castro and Mr. Jones for a great SAT Day! Over 100 students took the test, and they were excited and motivated to be in school!
  • Shout out to the Dean Team, and Equity Team, for working with our SGA to develop student led plans to enhance our Equity and Anti-Racist work!

WEEK 3 OF ADVISORY 4

We are nearing the midpoint of the  fourth Advisory! By this week, all students should have completed some of the first parts of their GRASPS, and have begun working to revise to standard.  Work should be completed incrementally each day on different standards aligned parts of the GRASPS.   Our goal over the past advisory has been to improve the portfolio process by making sure students know how to organize their work in an e-portfolio format, either on CANVAS, or in Summit. That process begins with the first project of the advisory.

INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR

The Instructional Calendar is a living document that houses all the major curricular requirements, assessments, and schoolwide events. The Instructional Calendar is complete for the moment, however changes may be made and will be noted.  If you have any requests for additions to the Instructional Calendar, please contact Mr. Magee,, peter.magee@k12.dc.gov, or your SLC Administrator.

IMPACT UPDATES

Cycle 2 Observations are now taking place for those who did not opt out of the second observation. As a follow up to our IMPACT orientation, we are creating a library of practices and videos to support development on particular EP’s.  As we discussed, we are all in a learning curve with virtual instruction and will be learning from each other throughout the year.  If you would like to share a best practice and be videotaped for the video library, please let your SLC Administrator know.

THE CHEC GARDEN

Last week, with all the students in Ms. Hartwill’s Biology class lending their hands, the raised beds were brought to completion and some of the soil amendments were performed. A huge thank you to Dr. Vernon Baker and David Alarcon and Company for all of their work in constructing the new raised beds.  The weather will be very warm mid-week - in the 80’s – the garden is open, plants are ready, now at CHEC, and will be put in the ground, and you can bring any class you like outside to enjoy the environment.  Ask your students – “Are there vegetables that you would like to grow in the garden?” Send all requests to robin.winer@k12.dc.gov

THE DEAN TEAM:
Greetings CHEC Family,

We hope you all are well. The Dean Team would like to share a few shout outs and friendly reminders.

Teacher Spotlight:
Today the spotlight shines on Ellen Nakpil!

Ms. Nakpil is our Read 180 teacher. She has impacted the lives of many students within his eight years of service at CHEC. When asked how students earn badges in class, Ms. Nakpil responded saying, ”Students can earn badges as specified in Canvas such as participation in Live classes and asynchronous learning, attending advisory and WUW classes, among others. Additionally, my students also earn stickers when they complete a whole segment in the Read 180 platform.” Ms. Nakpil shared the following when asked how has using restorative practices in your class helped you during virtual learning, “Restorative practices have become "restorative healing" for me. Hearing the voice of students and learning about their fears, doubts as well as their hopes and dreams have encouraged me to press on.” Thank you, Ms. Napkil, for your commitment to your students and team.

Everyone, please shine your light on Ms. Nakpil this week!
