CHEC SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

SUMMER CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE
There will be two opportunities to work on compensated curriculum development.  Teachers will be compensated at the rate of $43.00 per hour, and will be able to work up to five hours a day, five days a week, on approved curriculum development tasks.  It is also possible to work for fewer hours or days, if desired. All work will be conducted on site, and will involve peer review and tuning of products.  There will also be a UBD refresher or introduction, for those who need it.  The two weeks that are available are: July 22-26 and August 12 through 16.

All sessions will be led by DCPS teachers and will include resources for teachers to use in their classrooms!
Participants must register for each session individually

COOPERATIVE APPROACHES TO LANGUAGE LEARNING (6 PLUs)
Tuesday, June 18, 9:00am-3pm, rm 314
In this session, teachers will explore a range of cooperative learning strategies that can be used across content areas in order to give students the opportunity to develop and strengthen academic language.

ENGAGING ELs THROUGH MULTIPLE MODALITIES (3 PLUs)
Wednesday, June 19, 9am-12pm, rm 314
This session will explore ways to differentiate instruction for ELs using multiple modalities, and provide strategic opportunities for student talk.

ENGAGING ELs IN COLLABORATIVE CONVERSATIONS (2 PLUs)
Wednesday, June 19, 1:00pm-3:00pm, rm 314
In this session, teachers will have the opportunity to learn new strategies to support language learners in engaging in collaborative conversations.

INTERACTIVE APPROACHES TO COMPLEX TEXTS FOR ELs (6 PLUs)
Thursday, June 20, 9:00am-3:00pm, rm 314
This session will draw on the Council of Great City Schools' 3L's Program to model and practice ways to use interactive approaches that help make complex texts accessible for ELs.

COLLABORATIVE LITERATURE CIRCLES WITH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (3 PLUs)
Friday, June 21, 9am-12pm, rm 315
In this session, teachers will practice how to plan and implement collaborative literature circles with language learners.

USING EUREKA MATH WITH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (3 PLUs)
Friday, June 21, 9am-12pm, rm 314
In this session, teachers will explore strategies to making Eureka math lessons comprehensible to language learners, and will receive sample materials to use in their classrooms.
